WEM Pastoral Information
This page provides basic information to Lutheran pastors seeking the opportunity to serve as preacher and worship leader in Lutherstadt Wittenberg for Wittenberg English Ministry (WEM).
WEM pastors serve 2 weeks in Wittenberg. Typically conducting 3 devotional services and 1 worship service each week. Occasionally there may be requests from a group traveling through Wittenberg for an additional devotional service. The worship service is held on Saturdays at 5 PM. They can be no longer than 45 minutes. Pastors prepare a different worship service and sermon for each of the 2 Saturdays. The 3 weekday devotional services are 20-minute devotionals held on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Pastors prepare two different 20-minute devotional services and sermons – one for each week’s 3 services.
As a WEM pastor, you’re not alone while in Wittenberg. WEM Deputy Directors are there during the six months from May through October to facilitate and guide you during your 2 weeks of serving. These Deputy Directors are all long-time church lay leaders and are there to assist you.
The Deputy Director will contact you well in advance of your serving date to get acquainted and to answer any questions you might have. A Pastor Planning Guide will be sent to each pastor, well in advance, so that each pastor will have an understanding of what is expected of them along with their responsibilities while in Wittenberg.
Each Thursday evening, there is an English Stammtisch, a gathering of adults who are interested in speaking English and sharing fellowship. This is a German-organized gathering, not a WEM event. Serving pastors and the Deputy Directors attend the weekly Stammtisch.
WEM Pastors pay their own way. However, WEM has negotiated a discount rate for pastors at the martas Hotel in Lutherstadt Wittenberg. The martas is a 3-star hotel located in the heart of the historic old town and is the hotel of choice for many English speakers. Current WEM discounted daily rates are listed below. Airfare is quite variable. Depending on whether you are traveling “in season” or on the “shoulder season” there is quite a variance. To get a feel for airfare, check one of the online sites such as Google Flights or Kayak or consult a travel agent.. Berlin is the closest international airport to Wittenberg and about an hour’s train ride will get you to Wittenberg.
