The Wittenberg English Ministry is happy to offer visitors to Lutherstadt Wittenberg from within Germany and from around the world the opportunity to worship in English at the Castle Church and Town Church made famous by Dr. Martin Luther and his colleagues.
A special program of Worship in the English language has been developed to provide spiritual fulfillment for the many thousands of non-German speaking tourist/pilgrims who visit Lutherstadt Wittenberg from all parts of the world. The program was begun in 1997 and has been expanded in 1998 to last the entire six month tourist season from May through October.
The English Worship Services are held every Saturday from 5:00 to 6:00 pm at either the Castle Church or the Town Church.
These services provide opportunity for people from all parts of the world and from many Christian backgrounds to sing the hymns of faith, to pray, to hear the Word of God, and to give thanks for the spiritual blessings they have received through the Reformation of the Church by Dr. Martin Luther and his colleagues. Each service includes the opportunity to sing Luther's famous "Ein Feste Burg Ist Unser Gott" ("A Mighty Fortress Is Our God") accompanied by the great pipe organs of the churches. American Pastors lead the worship and offer the Sermon. All texts are in English, and hymns are representative of the standard Protestant repertoire. During the services, hymns and special music are offered on the impressive pipe organs located in the churches. Worshipers follow the German tradition of being seated after the last hymn to appreciate the postlude.
Mid-week Chapel services in the Corpus Christi Chapel (beside the Town Church) on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 4:30 to 5:00 p.m. are also conducted.
These services are held at the Corpus Christi Chapel (built ca. 1380) on the grounds of the Town Church. Tour groups are invited to arrange with the American pastor for special services which may be conducted on other days and times as well. Contact the Wittenberg Information Center adjacent to the Castle Church as much in advance as possible to schedule a service.
